Babies get civil naming ceremony
Baby
New parents will be offered naming ceremonies from next year
Berkshire parents who want to celebrate a new arrival in a non-religious way are being offered civil baby naming ceremonies for the first time.

Registrars in West Berkshire are also giving couples the chance to reaffirm their marriage vows outside of church.

And families can arrange non-religious civil funerals as part of the new services on offer at Peake House Register Office in Newbury.

Councillors agreed the changes - to start in 2005 - at a Thursday meeting.

Executive councillor Mike Rodger said: "These new services will establish West Berkshire as progressive in this area.

"As well as increasing the range of ceremonies, the register office will also spend time with people ahead of each service, to agree the format and discuss requirements."
