National and local artists will work with Slough community groups

National and local artists have been invited to work with community groups across Slough to develop ideas for the new look High Street.

Over the next year, residents will be asked to give their views on three designs created for the main road.

The Art at the Centre Slough project is aimed at attracting future art and cultural events to the town.

Promoting diversity

To mark the launch of the initiative on Wednesday, new banners showcasing original art were installed in the town square.

Throughout the day, postcards made from the banners - which depict Slough's industrial heritage - will be handed to shoppers to raise awareness about the scheme.

New street furniture, paving and lighting are just some of the features of the project, which has been funded by the borough council and Arts Council South East.

Project manager Roger Kirkham said: "This is a really exciting initiative that will transform the town centre and promote Slough's diverse community through art.

"We want to get local people involved in the project to make the High Street a place to really be proud of." Work on the High Street is expected to begin in March 2006.
