The Art at the Centre scheme will see a host of arts events brought to the town and its High Street given a makeover.

Over the next year, three designs for the new-look street will be drawn up for residents to have their say.

National and local artists will also be asked to come up with ideas for the street, work on which is set to be completed by March 2006.

Project manager Roger Kirkham said: "We want to get local people involved in the project to make the high street a place to really be proud of."

The borough council's culture boss, councillor Rajinder Sandhu, said: "Slough is a special town because of its communities, ambitions and energy.

"We want to make sure the High Street reflects the town and its qualities and that's why it has been important to involve local people."

The scheme will be developed alongside the Heart of Slough project, which is to regenerate the Brunel bus station and roundabout area.
