Battle to stop post office closures
post office
The Post Office is planning to close eight branches in Berkshire.
A delegation is meeting with senior Post Office managers in an attempt to halt plans to close eight branches in Berkshire.

Reading West MP, Martin Salter and The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) will express their concerns about the plan affecting Reading and Wokingham.

The FSB is worried that many small retailers will suffer when the post offices inside their shops close.

There is a six-week consultation period being carried out by Postwatch, the industry watchdog, over the planned closures.

Karen Durcan, of the FSB said: "We accept that the Post Office is losing quite a lot of money and they are going to have to close some of the sub post offices.

"We're not saying that they shouldn't close any of them, just that there's been very little consultation.

"They haven't looked at the individual circumstances of each closure and how it will affect the community and the small businesses that use those post offices."

The Post Office is proposing to close 3,000 offices across the UK as part of a restructuring programme.
