Michael Perham, from Potters Bar, ended his 3,500-mile voyage when he sailed into Nelson's Dockyard in Antigua on 3 January after six weeks at sea.

He had set off from Gibraltar on board his 28ft (8.5m) yacht, Cheeky Monkey.

Mr Glenday said: "We are putting the book together now for 2008 and he's secured his place. I'll be surprised if someone younger can do this."

During the journey, Michael battled against giant waves, shark-infested waters and hurricane winds.

He was shadowed during the journey by his father Peter.

The voyage also raised �3,000, shared between Children in Need and RYA Sailability, which promotes sailing for disabled people.

Michael beat the previous record for the youngest person to cross the Atlantic by one year and 91 days.
