More than 90 weapons including knives were collected |
Police seized 90 knives and other weapons when visitors to Luton Carnival were screened using metal detectors at the town's train station. More than 7,000 people went through metal airport-style arches at Luton railway station on Monday on their way to the town's International Carnival.
British Transport Police were behind the operation which saw 26 arrests.
At least two people were charged with possession of an offensive firearm, a police spokesman said.
'Absolutely appalling'
Among the weapons confiscated were a taser, batons and CS canisters.
Supt Alex Carson said he was horrified by the number of knives and dangerous weapons found.
"It is absolutely appalling," he said.
"There is a knife carrying culture amongst some groups of young people that is extremely dangerous."
Ch Insp Peter Buckingham, from Luton Police, whose force supported the British Transport Police, said: "Thankfully the majority of people who attended the carnival were well behaved but what this does show is that there is a dangerous culture of knife carrying that we must break."
