New police powers come into force this weekend to curb anti-social behaviour in a Bedfordshire town. After a series of incidents, including arson attacks and harassment, the town of Flitwick is now covered by a Dispersal Order.
The order allows police to move on groups of two or more people accused of intimidation or harassment.
The new powers also mean officers can escort home anyone under the age of 16 who is out on the streets after 9pm.
Six month order
A police spokesman said: "The powers are designed to prevent residents from feeling threatened by groups of people hanging around public spaces.
"It also protects children from the risks of being unaccompanied on the streets at night."
The six-month order was approved by Mid Beds District Council on Christmas Eve.
Deputy Divisional Commander Supt Andy Martin stressed Flitwick was not noted for particularly high crime levels - but police had noticed an increase in nuisance behaviour and criminal damage with the darker evenings.
"The community can help by having the courage to come forward with information about offenders and parents can assist by continually asking themselves where their children are at night and what they are up to," he said.
