Businesses found breaking the law could lose their licence
Police in Bedfordshire are to crack down on shop owners who sell alcohol to children.

Officers are to stage an undercover operation to test off-licences in the run up to Christmas.

Police will work with young volunteers aged about 14 to find out if shop owners are willing to sell alcohol to the under 18s.

Operation Lead will focus on Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Leighton Buzzard, Flitwick, Ampthill and Shefford areas.

Children will be cautioned

Licensing officer, PC Chris Carey, said: "Each Christmas we get complaints about under-age drinking and alcohol-related crime.

"We are giving fair warning we will be out there and taking action against those who break licensing laws."

Police will also stage high visibility patrols at the weekend and will be on the look out for crime and anti-social behaviour.

Children caught drinking will be cautioned and their parents informed.

Businesses found breaking the law will face a fine or could even lose their licence.
