Teenage cancer unit work starting at Cambridge hospital

Work is under way on a specialist £2.5m cancer treatment unit for young people at a Cambridgeshire hospital.

The unit at Addenbrooke's in Cambridge will cater for people from the county and patients from Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk aged between 13 and 24.

It will provide 11 in-patient beds, open-plan social and recreation areas, kitchen and dining area for patients.

It was built with money from an appeal started in 2007 to provide a unit designed to suit teenage lifestyles.

The design includes digital lighting systems, broadband, computer games, music and entertainment equipment.

"Teenagers and young adults with cancer have particular needs," hospital chief executive Dr Gareth Goodier said.

"Past and present patients have had significant input into the facility's design.

"We hope it will not only provide the right care and support while undergoing treatment, but it will allow teenagers to be teenagers."
