Motorists warned as snow arrives

Some of the region's highways are badly affected

Overnight snow and sub-zero temperatures across the North East of England caused schools to close and brought disruption to major roads.

Motorists were advised to drive with care, with reports of heavy traffic on the A167, A171 and A174. A jack-knifed lorry has forced the A178 to close.

About 10 schools have closed due to access problems.

East Cleveland and Darlington were the worst affected with up to four inches reported in some areas.

Further snow and sleet showers are expected during the day, with temperatures struggling to reach 1C.

Roads affected across the North East of England include A168, closed between Dishforth and Thirsk due to a jack-knifed lorry, the A167 between at Newton Aycliffe through Darlington, A171 at Guisborough and Middlesbrough, the A174 at Teesside.

Schools that have closed include: Wolsingham School and Community College in Weardale; Kirby and Great Broughton School; Bilsdale, Midcable and Chopgate School; Freebrough Specialist Engineering College in Brotton; Middleton Tyas School, near Richmond; St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School, Richmond; Whittonstall School, Consett; Asmotherly Primary School; Laurence Jackson School, Guisborough, Reece and Gunnerside primary school, Swaledale .
