The club play Juventus on 1 August in Italy |
A special edition beer is being brewed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of an amateur County Durham football team winning the first World Cup. West Auckland FC lifted the World Cup in Turin in 1909 - then known as the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. Lipton Trophy Ale is being produced by Maxim Brewery at Houghton-le-Spring, near Sunderland. The club play Italian giants Juventus next month to mark a famous 6-1 victory in defence of the title in 1911. Mark Anderson, the brewery's commercial director said: "We are pleased to have been asked to produce this beer, especially as we can trace the origins of our famous Double Maxim back over 100 years. "Legend has it that the half-time oranges were dispensed with in favour of a half of Maxim Ale to keep the lads going." The brewery is donating 10p from every pint sold towards the football club. In 1909, Sir Thomas Lipton, a millionaire philanthropist, commissioned the trophy for world competition, which featured sides from the host country as well as Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain. The West Auckland team, which was made up of mainly local coal miners, beat Stuttgart of Germany in the opening round and went on to beat Winterthur of Switzerland 2-0 in the inaugural final.
