Date for World Cup centenary game

West Auckland Town AFC
The club has appealed for help to cover the cost of the trip

The date for an amateur County Durham football team to relive a memorable victory by playing famous Italian side Juventus has been fixed.

In April 1909 a team of miners from West Auckland became the first to lift the World Cup in Turin when they beat Switzerland's FC Winterhour 2-0.

Two years later they defended their title beating Juventus 6-1.

A match against Juventus to mark the centenary of the first victory will be played in Italy on 1 August.

The team is planning to travel to Italy by coach and manager Stuart Alderson estimates the whole cost of the trip will be £10,000.

He has appealed for local people and businesses to support them.

He said the players were looking forward to the opportunity of a lifetime.

"They will never ever get something like this in their lifetime again.

"This is just a one-off. They will never forget it, going across and playing a game like this," he said.
