Eleven lorries were swept on to their sides on the A1 and the roof of a Northern Rock building was ripped off as gales battered the North of England. High-sided vehicles were banned from the A1 in County Durham and North Yorkshire after the trucks overturned.
Builders were ordered off the site of the �60m Northern Rock office complex on Wearside as a gust blew off roof sheeting.
Highways workers also had to cope with clearing trees from the region's roads.
Police decided to shut the A1 to high-sided vehicles between junction 61 at Bowburn near Durham and junction 49 at Dishforth, North Yorkshire, when several lorries had come to grief.
Similar restrictions are in place on the A66 from Scotch Corner to Penrith.

In County Durham, a lorry went down an embankment between the Bradbury and Bowburn interchanges and another overturned at Junction 58 of the A1.
On the North Yorkshire stretch nine lorries overturned.
A van also crashed into the central barrier near Leeming, in what police described as a weather-related incident.
Elsewhere in Yorkshire, one lorry overturned on the A6108 in Richmond, two on the M1, and three on the M62.
No-one is reported injured in any of the incidents.
A street in Ashington, Northumberland, was closed when slates were blown off the roof of an electrical store. Other shops on Station Road were also evacuated while firefighters carried out checks.
Workers will be able to return to the Northern Rock office after winds have died down.
They are involved in putting the finishing touches to the complex, which will house administration staff, at Rainton Bridge near Sunderland.
