The bishop said an increase in clergy numbers was planned |
The Bishop of Lichfield has called for more churchgoers to offer themselves as clergy or lay leaders. The Right Reverend Jonathan Gledhill said over the next five years "the baby-boomer cohort of clergy is planning for retirement".
In a taped message played to churches in his diocese, he said: "Please pray that some of our clergy will retire a little later than at 65."
Bishop Gledhill said producing "high quality" clergy was the aim.
He added that plans for this year included increasing the number of new curates from nine to 11 and reversing the proposed cuts of three full-time clergy.
His diocese covers Staffordshire and areas of Shropshire and the Black Country.
