Many residents around the region fear flooding

Some homes and businesses have already been flooded across the region, after heavy rain and snowfall on Friday. Others have stockpiled sandbags.

Drivers are also being warned about freezing temperatures.

The Environment Agency said that several rivers could flood and advised people to check its website for more information.

These include the Avon between Twerton and Bristol, the Frome between Chipping Sodbury and Bristol, the Yeo between Congresbury and Wrington, the Chew from Chew Stoke to Keynsham and Winford Brook in Chew Magna.

The River Severn is expected to peak on Sunday between Tewkesbury and Gloucester and a severe warning has been issued for Lydney in Gloucestershire.

Residents worried

About 12 homes have flooded in Lydney.

Seven flood warnings remain in place in Wiltshire after Broughton Gifford and South Marston were hit.

Margaret Matthews, from Swineford, South Gloucestershire, said she was worried about the River Avon flooding her house.

"The river has risen such a lot [into my garden]. That and the surface water on the roads are going to meet.

"The council has just turned up with sandbags."

Flax Bourton and Backwell were particularly badly affected in the Bristol and North Somerset area.

Homes in Easton-in-Gordano were inundated and people had to be rescued from vehicles in Chew Magna and Barrow Gurney in North Somerset and Charfield in South Gloucestershire.

BBC meteorologist Richard Angwin said: "Between 25 and 35 millimetres of rain, sleet and snow fell across the region [on Friday]. That is about one third of the average January rainfall.

"Icy stretches are expected on untreated roads and drivers are advised to take great care on the roads.

"Further heavy rain is expected later on Sunday and there may be further localised flooding problems."
