The RSPCA has said the South East is facing a cat crisis and has issued an urgent appeal for new homes. More than 2,000 cats were abandoned in the South East in 2006, up 18% from the previous year, the organisation said.
It said nearly all its animal centres were full and its foster carers could not take any more felines either.
Sally Bruce, of the RSPCA, said: "It is quite normal for us to be overrun with kittens at this time of the year but this summer the situation is dire."
She said RSPCA Leybourne in Kent, the Danaher animal centre in Essex, Patcham animal centre near Brighton and Mount Noddy near Chichester, West Sussex, were all full.
Ms Bruce added: "There are so many older cats coming into RSPCA care that we can't rehome them fast enough to make space for new ones.
"All of the animal centres and branch rehoming centres in the South East are full of cats at the moment."
Many of the cats taken in by the RSPCA are found abandoned or handed in by owners who cannot cope with them.
