An anti-racism group is calling for action over alleged Islamophobic chants aimed at Middlesbrough striker Mido by Newcastle United supporters.

The Football Association (FA) is investigating claims of abuse against the Egyptian during Sunday's derby match at the Riverside Stadium.

Members of the Kick It Out campaign have offered to work with the clubs and the FA to produce a response.

Newcastle United has not commented on the actions of its fans.

A statement released on the campaign's website, said: "Kick It Out is concerned at the reports of racial abuse directed at Mido during the match this weekend.

"All of those involved in the game will be aware of the need to tackle racism and discrimination in all forms. Islamophobia is a dangerous and nasty form of racism.

"We will be working with our partners at the players' union, the PFA, the FA, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough to ensure an appropriate response to this incident."

Mido was booked for reacting to chants from the travelling supporters when he scored in the 2-2 draw.

Kick It Out was established in 1993 to tackle racism in football.
