Derailed wagons on the King Edward Bridge in Newcastle
Some service has resumed on the East Coast Mainline after two freight wagons became derailed outside Newcastle.

The line was blocked when two empty coal wagons left the line at King Edward Bridge, on Thursday at 0639 BST. Replacement buses were laid on, but by the afternoon a rail shuttle service was running once an hour in each direction between York and Newcastle.

Network Rail said engineers would continue to work through the night to remove the trucks and repair tracks.

Mainline services are expected to resume from Friday morning, with services to the west restored by the afternoon.

GNER, Transpennine, Northern and Virgin services were all affected by the accident which involved a goods train returning from the Drax Power station in North Yorkshire.

Nobody was hurt and an investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch is under way.
