The study found the site could support a hot springs spa |
Plans for a hot springs spa at a former cement works have been given a boost after the site was explored. The spa is part of the proposed Eastgate Renewable Energy Village at the former Lafarge Blue Circle Cement works, near Stanhope, Weardale.
A 995m borehole was drilled and initial findings of the report into the geothermal source are that the water flow is enough to supply a spa.
It could also be used as part of a green heating system.
The study, which is being carried out by PB Power and Newcastle University, is one of a number being carried out to support a planning application submission, expected in May 2007.
Visitor attraction
PB Power senior engineer Daniel Dufton: "We're pleased this ongoing research backs up our earlier findings at Eastgate.
"Crucially all the signs from the microbiological and chemical analysis are that the water is suitable for bathing and we expect further research, to be undertaken as the project progresses to a more detailed level of planning, to reinforce this finding.
"Pumping trials also reveal the water is in sufficient volumes to provide a sustainable source of heat for the development."
The project involves providing eco-friendly living, a visitor attraction, working and learning environment and creating jobs, homes and recreational facilities.
