Landmark chimney to be toppled
The former Lafarge cement works
The cement works closed in 2002 with the loss of 147 jobs
A 400ft-high chimney at a former cement works, which has stood as a Weardale landmark for the past 40 years, is to be demolished on Wednesday.

The Lafarge cement works closed three years ago with the loss of 147 jobs.

Three months ago, factory outbuildings and three 70ft silos on the site were flattened in a single explosion.

But toppling the chimney, a final act of closure, is set to be even more spectacular and the main road through Eastgate will be closed for one hour.

Demolition workers have stripped down the giant chimney to an empty shell, and dozens of holes have been bored into the brickwork for the detonator charges.
