Classical solution to youth gangs
Antonio Vivaldi
It is hoped "uncool" Vivaldi will discourage gatherings of youths
The Co-op has turned to classical music to discourage groups of youngsters from congregating outside one of its stores in County Durham.

Taped music will be broadcast from external speakers at the Cockfield branch, near Barnard Castle.

It is hoped the "uncool" composers such as Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi will deter potential troublemakers.

The company said the initiative has been used successfully at over 100 other Co-op stores elsewhere in the UK.

The Cockfield store is the first branch in the north east to make use of the system, which will be installed in a further 14 stores in the region over the next month.

Members of staff can control the volume, increasing it where necessary.

Steve Hogarth, said: "Some of our stores have problems with youths who gather outside and they can intimidate shoppers and our staff.

"Playing the music makes our shops 'less cool' as places for youngsters to hang out, and can make life much easier for our customers and staff."
