Drier weather meant that storm pollution was reduced
Nearly 80% of monitored beaches in the South West have top quality bathing waters, the Marine Conservation Society's 2006 Good Beach Guide says.

The region set a new record, with 78% - 152 out of 195 monitored - being recommended. The region was equal top in the guide with the South East.

Officials said it was down to South West Water's Clean Sweep campaign, as well as below average rainfall.

South West Water has spent 1bn on its coastal sewage treatment programme.

So far, the programme has seen more than 200 crude sewage outfalls removed around the region.

The Marine Conservation Society said that the drier weather last year also had an effect because storm pollution was sharply reduced.
