About 40,000 football fans attended the game at Sunderland |
Police on Wearside arrested 27 people at the derby match between Sunderland and Newcastle United on Monday. Most of the arrests, for drunkenness and minor public disorder offences, were made inside or close to the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.
Northumbria Police had a massive presence during the game, attended by 40,000 fans, which Newcastle won 1-4.
A force spokeswoman said officers had pre-empted the violence which has marred previous games between the two.
Supt Paul Weir added: "The enthusiasm, energy, vigilance and professionalism of the officers in carrying out their duties allowed us to pre-empt any moves made by those intending to cause disorder and prevent any violence occurring."
