Metro police on derby match alert
Extra police will be deployed on the Metro to ensure safety on the day of the Tyne and Wear derby.

They will patrol trains before and after Newcastle United's home game against Sunderland AFC which kicks off on Sunday lunchtime.

Pelaw, Heworth, Gateshead, Central, Monument, Haymarket and St James stations will also be heavily policed.

Sunderland fans are advised to travel to St James's Park on coaches laid on from the Stadium of Light.

A Nexus spokesman said: "It's a high profile match and we want to ensure that no trouble flares up either before or after the game on Metro property.

"Having extra staff and police on trains and at stations is an effective deterrent and will help to ensure a safe system for the vast majority of law abiding football fans."
