Travel timetables by text message
Passengers across the north-east of England can soon use text technology to track down their next bus or train.

The service uses special codes, which give information about specific buses or trains and services available from individual bus stops or stations.

From May timetable information about bus, Metro and even cross-Tyne ferries will be accessible by phone.

In future the service will also offer real-time information on the location of services using GPS satellites.

Shorter waiting

The system - dubbed traveline txt - is being backed by a consortium of public transport operators and local authorities.

A spokeswoman said: "This is designed to make using the bus, metro and ferry easier and more convenient.

"Passengers will be able to get a more accurate departure time and have shorter waiting times at the stop.

"This service is the first of its kind to offer information across various public transport services and is being launched across the North East in phases by a partnership of transport operators and local authorities throughout the region."

The service is due to be launched on 10 May in the Newcastle area.
