Squad to protect Metro passengers
A special security unit has been appointed to protect passengers on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Operators Nexus have selected Gateshead-based St James Security to tackle the "hardcore minority" of trouble causers.

The 15-person squad will tackle the perception that the Metro is an intimidating place at night, especially for women.

The unit is due to start patrolling the Metro in October.

Andy Bairstow, Nexus Commercial Director, said: "Incidents of serious crime on Metro are rare but low level anti-social behaviour and disorder from a hardcore minority is something our customers tell us they find intimidating."

The squad will tackle aggressive behaviour, begging, nuisance customers, alcohol problems and fare evasion.

It will also target hotspots of bad behaviour, begging and criminal damage.
