Texts come to aid of passengers
Passengers across the north-east of England are being encouraged to use mobile phones to find out when their next bus or train is due.

Information on services from bus or Metro stops and the cross-Tyne ferry terminals is now available via text.

Once a special code is entered, a list of departures is sent to the user's phone within seconds.

The system, dubbed traveline txt, is backed by public transport operators and local authorities.

Initially, the service relates to scheduled information, but it is hoped that real-time information using satellite technology will be available within months.

Martin Harris, the commercial director of Go North East buses, said: "It gives quick, clear information about departures in the near future.

"It is for short-term planning. Clearly, it's not going to help you if you are planning a trip to the seaside in three weeks' time, but if you want to know what is happening in the next hour or so, it is ideal."
