120 new traffic officers for M1
Traffic officers
The traffic officers will look after the East Midlands' busiest roads
A new team of 120 traffic officers are being recruited to look after roads in the East Midlands.

The Highways Agency team will be based at a 3m centre near junction 26 of the M1, on the Notts-Derbys border.

They will co-ordinate information on holds-ups and also patrol the motorway to enforce diversions and clear up accidents, backing up motorway police.

Police stress this will not mean fewer officers, and is not an alternative to uniformed policing.

The officers, being recruited by the Highways Agency, will not have the power of arrest, but will work with the police to help keep traffic moving.

They will cover the M1 through Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire from a fleet of 4x4 vehicles.

There will be other smaller bases for the team, including junction 23 at Shepshed, Leics, opening in February 2006.
