Work starts on jam-busting centre
Traffic on the M6
The centre is being built off the M6
Work is under way on a 5m control centre to keep traffic moving across the North West.

About 300 staff at the Regional Traffic Control Centre will help police manage jams and accidents on the roads.

The new centre is being built off the M6 between junctions 22 and 23 at Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside.

It will monitor traffic across Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria. It is expected to be up and running in autumn 2005.

The new Highways Agency Traffic Officers who will patrol the motorways will be based at the centre - which is one of seven planned across the country.

The officers will help police clear up after accidents, move abandoned vehicles, provide temporary road closures and clear debris from the road.
