King wants to write a musical about Cole Porter, his lawyer says |
Pop mogul Jonathan King will be freed on parole on Tuesday after serving less than half of a seven-year term for abusing boys, his lawyer has said. He had expected to leave on Thursday, but lawyer Giovanni de Stefano confirmed that King, 60, will now leave Maidstone Prison on 29 March.
King was jailed in 2001 for four indecent assaults and two serious sexual offences on boys aged 14 and 15.
His lawyer said police delayed his departure - a claim they deny.
Mr di Stefano said he had hoped that days King spent in police custody being interviewed about the offences would be considered by the prison governor and count as time served, allowing him to leave custody on Thursday morning.
However, he claimed Surrey police had held back the necessary information from the prison authorities to allow King to leave.
Release conditions
Surrey police said there had been no dispute with King's lawyer, adding that information about time spent in police custody would routinely be in the hands of the parole board and the Prison Service.
On release King will be banned from working with children, must stay at a specified address and not receive visits from anyone under 18 without permission, Mr di Stefano said.
Earlier, Mr di Stefano said his client had told him of some of his future plans.
"He intends to go back to his home in west London and get back to work. He said he wants to write a musical about Cole Porter."
King was charged for offences committed between 1983 and 1989 after an investigation by Surrey Police.
He denied the charges at his trial and has never admitted his guilt.
Last month, Mr di Stefano said King hoped to see his conviction quashed.
