King hopes to revive his music career |
Jonathan King hopes to be freed from prison within weeks, after serving less than half his seven-year sentence for child sex abuse, his lawyer said. The disgraced pop mogul was jailed in November 2001 for offences against youngsters committed in the 1980s.
But according to his lawyer, Giovanni di Stefano, probation officers have recommended King be released on parole by the end of March.
King also hopes to see his conviction quashed, Mr di Stefano added.
He said: "It has been recommended by the probation officers and by all the reports, because quite simply there has been no offending behaviour by Mr King for nearly 20 years."
If released on parole, 60-year-old King will have served less than half his sentence.
However, he would be put on the sex offenders register and have to comply with strict conditions.
Mr di Stefano said: "I speak to Mr King every day and he's anxious to be out.
"He has an elderly mother who he hasn't seen for two years and he is eminently not a danger to society."
Naked pictures
Mr di Stefano also said he was waiting for a hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice when he hoped to have the conviction against King quashed on a procedural mistake.
He claims the Director of Public Prosecutions never gave his consent for the prosecution to go ahead, which would render the conviction void.
King, charged under his real name Kenneth King, was found guilty on 27 September 2001 of four indecent assaults and two serious sexual offences against boys aged 14 and 15, committed in the 1980s.
The court heard that his "method" involved luring teenage boys back to his home before showing them pictures of naked women and assaulting them.
Music career
A search of his home by police revealed some of these photos, as well as several hundred photos of teenage boys which were not indecent.
In 2003 the Court of Appeal in London refused King permission to appeal against his conviction. King, who denied all the charges, had his first hit with Everyone's Gone to the Moon in 1965 and produced records for Genesis.
Mr di Stefano said King hopes to revive his music career upon his release.
He said: "He [King] says he doesn't want to be bitter but just get on and write music."
