Bus users in County Durham are to benefit from a new multi-million pound fleet of hi-tech vehicles. Transport giant Arriva says it plans to spend �3m on 27 new buses which will be based in Durham City. A further 27 are to be refitted.
The new vehicles will feature headrests, tinted windows and added security measures, such as CCTV.
The move follows an announcement that Durham City Council plans to buy the city's ageing bus station from Arriva.

The new and refurbished fleet will be on the roads by July.
Arriva North East managing director Steve Noble said: "By introducing so many new vehicles into service at one time, in one place, we will change the face of public transport in Durham overnight."
Chris Tunstall, deputy chief executive at Durham County Council, said it was "great news" for public transport users.
In February Durham County Council said it was spending �250,000 on the city's North Road station.
It was built in the 1970s but improvements will include an enclosed passenger waiting area, better CCTV coverage, improved lighting and hi-tech information display systems.
