Two lorries and 19 cars were involved in an accident on a Kent motorway as the icy snap gripped the county. Poor visibility is being blamed for the crash between junctions five and six on the M2 coast bound, which left one person needing treatment for shock.
Snow flurries and plunging temperature forced more than 100 Kent schools and colleges to close on Wednesday.
Train services across south-east England were hit, with warnings of last minute cancellations and delays.
There were also some freight delays at Eurotunnel because of snow on the platforms.
Police closed a section of the M2 after the crash on Wednesday morning and some motorists had to be freed from their vehicles by fire crews.
In Surrey, a man in his 20s died when his car crashed outside a pub in Epsom.
The eastern part of Kent was the most severely affected on Wednesday with Sussex not so badly hit by the icy snap.
More snow is expected throughout the day and into Thursday.

Brian Carter, Kent County Council's winter service duty officer, said: "We are expecting the roads to freeze about nine-o'clock tonight and then some more prolonged snow may come in.
"The main areas of risk tonight are west and central Kent but certainly over the north downs.
"If they just stay as showers there is no problem.
"The problem is if the showers collect together into a big lump then we are at risk of a larger fall of snow."
South Eastern Trains has been warning customers of problems across its network with delays of up to 70 minutes expected.
