Project could create 10,000 jobs
Plans to build a new business park in the north-east of England could create up to 10,000 jobs.

A partnership of councils and development agencies has recommended the scheme as part of a plan to boost the region's economy.

The study revealed the best site for the park would be on land in the Wardley area of South Tyneside.

It is hoped that offices, hotel and leisure facilities and shops could be built on the proposed park.

The leader of South Tyneside Council, Paul Waggott, said: "If these recommendations become a reality, South Tyneside, Gateshead and Sunderland will have a fantastic opportunity to reduce unemployment levels, secure jobs and create training opportunities."

If approved, the partnership says the scheme could go ahead within the next five to 10 years.

The plans have been put together by a partnership of South Tyneside, Gateshead and Sunderland Councils, along with One NorthEast, English Partnerships, the Tyne Wear Partnership and the European Regional Development Fund.
