Staff wishing to share can register their details on a website noting pick-up and drop-off points.

People carrying out similar journeys are then able to get in touch.

It forms part of Darlington's Town on the Move initiative, a �3.24m programme funded by the Department for Transport, to find solutions to traffic problems.

Protect environment

Darlington is one of only three towns in the country chosen to run the initiative.

Plans include the introduction of individualised travel plans for residents, the development of more cycle and bus routes, and extending bike and walk to school schemes.

In March, the first of three national sustainable transport summits will be held at the Dolphin Centre.

Nick Wallis, Darlington Council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "Car sharing is a step in the right direction in helping to reduce traffic congestion in Darlington.

"It will help staff save money and protect the environment at the same time."
