Litter campaign targets smokers
cigarette ends
Cigarette ends add to the litter problem
Cigarette ends and discarded cigarette packets and lighters are the focus of a special anti-litter day held in Darlington on Saturday.

Uniformed council wardens will patrol smoking-related litter hot-spots and hand out free portable ashtrays.

Members of Darlington Primary Care Trust's smoking cessation team will also offer guidance and information for people wishing to quit smoking.

And smokers can take part in a free-prize draw when they use special bins.

'No excuse'

Cigarette bins were installed in the town centre two years ago, as part of Darlington Borough Council's anti-litter drive.

Bill Dixon, the council's cabinet member for community and public protection, said: "Smoking related litter makes our town look untidy.

"The Council has provided places for people to dispose of their smoking related litter including special cigarette bins - there is no excuse for dropping cigarette packets and lighters on our streets.

"Our Wardens will fine people caught dropping smoking related litter on our streets."
