One of the aims is to prevent sneak-in burgalries |
People throughout the region are being urged to take extra care to avoid becoming the target of opportunist criminals this summer. Northumbria Police have issued crime prevention advice as part of their 'Turn Up the Heat...on crime' campaign.
Police will be advising about home security during holidays and how to avoid sneak-in burglaries, as well as preventing thefts from sheds.
Events are being held in the force area to raise awareness of the campaign.
Protect property
Assistant Chief Constable David Warcup said: "People tend to feel that dark winter nights offer the best opportunities for crime, but the summer brings a completely different set of chances for thieves.
"Much of what we do in the summer creates an open invitation for crime. Warmer temperatures encourage people to leave their windows ajar and their doors and sheds unlocked as they spend more time outside.
"We hope that the public will join with us to 'turn up the heat' on crime by taking a few simple crime prevention measures to protect their property.
"Thieves usually steal small, easily taken items, including handbags and purses and there are examples where both the car keys and cars have been taken. These are sometimes then used to commit further crime."
Posters, leaflets and postcards will be used to help get the message across.
At different stages of the campaign, residents will be able to claim free security devices by logging onto the Northumbria Police website.
