Town talks about flooding problem

It is estimated 28 days worth of rain fell in two days in the East Midlands
Three floods in two weeks have prompted traders and residents in Market Harborough to demand action.

About 70 people complained about rivers of raw sewage running through their homes and businesses.

The meeting in the Leicestershire town heard Anglia Water is due to begin a flood alleviation scheme in September after a long delay.

But Harborough District Council leader Robin Totten said the scheme will not make a difference.

He told BBC Radio Leicester the scheme was "impractical" but said the meeting on Wednesday night was "constructive".

'Nothing being done'

"Heavy rainfall is going to happen more often and... you are going to have flooding you really cannot prevent unless you have a multi-million pound investment in every small town, which is quite impractical."

One woman told the meeting she had been told by the council that during the flooding the person responsible for early warning was away on holiday.

Flooding in the last few days has cost Gillian Walker from the Red Cow pub 22,000 because she cannot be insured.

But she said the meeting was not helpful.

"I feel as if I've come away with nothing being done. I've got two phone numbers of the local MP and that's it."

Anglian Water did not attend the meeting but says it hopes its flood alleviation scheme can be finished by next Spring.
