More pubs are offering free soft drinks to designated drivers |
Pubs on Tyneside are offering free drinks to motorists this Christmas. But the tipples are alcohol free soft drinks, and they are only available to designated drivers.
The move, by pubs in the John Barras chain, is aimed at cutting the number of drink-driving incidents in the area.
So far 15 pubs have backed a campaign organised by the Portman Group, which represents the drinks industry in the UK.
A spokesman for the Tyneside-based chain, said: "This will be the third year we have supported the 'I'll Be Des' campaign, which encourages party revellers to agree on a person in their group to be the designated driver and not drink.
Reinforcing drink-drive message
"To encourage customers to have a designated driver, the managers are offering free refills of any soft drink purchased all night."
Janice Blacklock, manager of the Anson pub in Wallsend, said: "Everyone wants to have a happy Christmas and New Year and as a responsible community pub we want to do our bit to hopefully make it a safe one.
"By offering the designated driver free refills all night we hope that they feel valued and appreciated not only by their friends but by us!"
Jim Minton, director of campaigns for The Portman Group said: "We're delighted that John Barras pubs have introduced the campaign.
"Thanks to the support of licensees like Janice, the campaign will reinforce the message not to drink and drive."
