Students get rural transport boost
Dales
The money will help pupils living in rural areas
Hundreds of teenagers living in rural areas are to get an extra incentive to continue their studies.

North Yorkshire County Council has allocated 200,000 to help pupils who are over 16 get to and from college.

The move will help about 430 students by providing them with free travel passes.

Previous financial constraints had led the council to change the mileage qualification for which teenagers could get grants.

Councillor Chris Metcalfe said: "There were pupils catching the bus for free at 15 and as soon as they turned 16 and were doing their A levels the threshold rose from three to five miles and they had to pay.

"Thankfully we have been able to put that right."

Head of continuing education Chris McGee said the county had a good record for the number of pupils studying post-16 despite the transport difficulties.
