Families encouraged to settle in Dales

A new nursery is being built to try to encourage more young families to settle in the Yorkshire Dales.

Outside toilets and storage buildings at Reeth Community Primary School, in Swaledale, are being converted into a purpose-built facility.

Two Dales Nursery will take children from Reeth, Gunnerside, and Arkengarthdale primary school catchment areas.

Previously parents have had to take their young children as far as Richmond.

June opening

County councillor Chris Metcalfe said: "We are hoping this scheme will entice young families back to the Dales.

"We are also looking at having childcare as well so they can have full day provision."

Godfrey Wilson, heateacher of Reeth Primary School, said the project had involved teachers and governors from three schools.

He added: "We were even looking at using village halls but couldn't find one that was suitable.

"Then it was suggested to convert our outbuildings which in terms of maintenance were becoming a bit of a liability."

The nursery will be able to take 13 children and is due to open in June.
