Town looks for traffic fix

The town can become choked with traffic
A Derbyshire market town has been chosen for a national project to address traffic issues.

The A6 through Bakewell has been selected by Transport 2000 to come up with solutions to ease congestion.

The town is one of only seven areas in the country to be selected.

The project will examine ideas from both abroad and within the local community.

Linda Beard from Transport 2000 says the aim is to make Bakewell a safer place.

"The town has got market days which attract a lot of people and a lot of traffic.

Open mind

"But the roads are quite narrow and the pavements are narrow and the result is congestion.

"We think Bakewell would be a very interesting place to look at how to reduce the impact of traffic on the roads."

Transport 2000 will set up a monitoring group to talk to townspeople and share ideas.

The group will also travel to towns in Germany and the Netherlands to see how they have dealt with congestion.

Ms Beard said they were open-minded about exactly what kind of solutions would be put forward.
