Patients sometimes have to wait on trolleys |
The Leicester Royal Infirmary is spending over 100,000 on a temporary solution to the bed crisis in its A and E department. A disused ward, which used to be part of the hospital's infectious diseases unit, is being opened for four weeks while it awaits refurbishment.
Managers say it will help tackle the problem of patients being left on trolleys in corridors while they wait for treatment.
Anne McGregor, from the Hospital's Trust, says they are still looking for a permanent solution.
She said: "It's a short term measure for just the four weeks and it's a costly measure.
"It is costing the hospital 130,000 in nursing staff alone for the four week period to keep the ward open."
