Surrey Police have launched a fresh appeal for information on the murder of Amanda Dowler, exactly one year after the 13-year-old disappeared. Officers stopped members of the public at Walton-on-Thames railway station on Wednesday and are expected to continue their enquiries there on Thursday.
They are also visiting Yateley Heath Wood, near Fleet, Hampshire, where the schoolgirl's remains were found on 18 September.
The appeal comes one day before the funeral of the teenager, known as Milly, on Friday. The private service will be held at an undisclosed location.
Milly's parents, Bob, 50, an IT consultant, and mother Sally, a 43-year-old teacher, are expected to issue a statement to mark the tragic anniversary. They have said they do not wish to give any interviews.
Renewed appeal
The officer leading the inquiry, Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Denholm, is also due to make a renewed appeal for information.
A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: "There will be a private service for invited family and friends only. The family have requested that the media respect their privacy at the ceremony."
Popular Milly went missing after catching a train from her school in Weybridge, Surrey, to her home in Walton.
Police said a witness had seen two men with a girl in school uniform 300 yards from where her body was found on the day she vanished.
But her killer or killers have never been caught despite extensive police inquiries and witness appeals.
