Passengers told to belt up
A new seatbelt campaign is underway in County Durham to help cut the number of casualties on the region's roads.

The two week scheme will focus on the importance of safety seats for children as well highlighting current seatbelt laws.

Recent checks by Durham Police revealed eight out of ten child safety seats were not fitted correctly.

PC Dave Nixon, Durham Police's casualty reduction officer, told BBC Radio Cleveland it was important to get people to belt up in the back.

'No reason'

He said: "What we have found is the number of people wearing seatbelts in the front of vehicles is now good.

"The majority of people, when they get into a car, will put a seatbelt on when they are in the front.

"We find problems with people in the rear of vehicles. They tend not to wear their seatbelts.

"I don't know the reason why not, it is the law after all.

"What we are doing with this campaign is trying to encourage folk to belt up when they are in the back of a vehicle as well."
