| Wednesday, 6 February, 2002, 14:45 GMT Seatbelt fines on the increase ![]() A campaign is urging motorists to wear their seatbelts The police have issued almost 6,000 fixed penalty tickets in six months to people in Northern Ireland who were not wearing their seat belts. They are hoping the tickets will help cut the number of road deaths in the province. The campaign, which was launched in July last year, led to 5,916 penalties of 30 being issued by December. The police and the Department of the Environment believe 20 deaths and many more serious injuries could be avoided every year if more seat belts were worn.
Georgina Greer of the Road Safety Council, welcomed the figures. "It is extremely important and we would fully support the police and the Road Safety department on encouraging people to wear seat belts," she said. "It is quite obvious, it does save lives. "Certainly back seat passengers are a great risk, not only to themselves but to the people in the front of the car." Inspector Brian Kee, of the police's Road Policing Development Branch, warned drivers and passengers alike that the campaign was set to continue for the foreseeable future. |
