Bus operators are urged to consult local people more effectively
Transport in Bristol is again under the spotlight with a new report on the city's buses to be discussed by councillors.

Changes and improvements needed to improve the city's bus services are detailed in the report, due to be discussed on Monday 24 March.

Almost 60 recommendations are outlined for changes to the way the government, bus operator First and local councils work.

If adopted, the report would be sent to relevant parties - including the Department for Transport - asking them to implement the recommendations.

Outlined proposals

Councillor David Kitson said: "Bus services are the most widely used form of transport and are essential to the economic prosperity of Bristol.

"There are a number of innovative and imaginative ideas in the report that we believe can make a real difference.

"It also underlines many of the concerns that politicians, residents, the media and local businesses have previously expressed."

Recommendations include:

  • Bus priority measures - such as showcase bus routes - to continue

  • Bus operators to consult local people more effectively and provide clearer information at bus stops

  • A necklace of park and ride facilities to be created around the city

  • More government revenue and funding for councils

  • Government-provided tax relief to employers with green travel plans

It also wants First to improve its recruitment and retention of bus drivers; increase the number of inspectors in the city centre, and do more to promote advance ticket sales.
