Fire-hit camp popular with workers
Fire at Centre Parcs Elveden
The fire destoyed the central dome area of the resort
A holiday camp in Suffolk which was destroyed by a fire last year has been inundated with applications from people hoping to work there.

The Center Parcs complex at Elveden was gutted by fire on 4 April 2002, causing the evacuation of 3,500 guests and 400 staff.

The camp is now due to re-open on 11 July and 2,700 people have applied for the 500 jobs on offer.

Of the 270 staff laid off as a result of the fire, 130 have been re-employed by Center Parcs.

The fire is thought to have begun during repair work to the resort's distinctive roof structure.

'Swift progress'

At its height, a large column of smoke could be seen for miles around.

It took 150 firefighters several hours to bring the fire under control, using water from a nearby lake to extinguish the flames.

Center Parcs have rebuilt and improved the site and Don Camilleri, director of development and engineering, said: "I'm absolutely delighted with the swift progress that has been made.

"I'd like to pay tribute to the professionalism and determination of everyone involved."

Resort staff, including the new recruits, are due to begin preparations for the re-opening when they return to the site next month.
