| Saturday, 6 April, 2002, 10:11 GMT 11:11 UK Jobs threat after holiday complex fire ![]() Twenty-five fire crews were at the scene Staff at the Center Parcs holiday complex in Suffolk could be out of a job after a massive fire. All 3,500 guests at the Elveden site in Suffolk were safely evacuated on 4 April after fire broke out in the roof of the resort. Now the company says the 1,100 staff have been told they will get full pay for the next two months - but after that it is not clear how many will keep their jobs. Fire crews are still damping down at the scene and a full investigation has yet to begin.
A Center Parcs spokesman said rebuilding work will take several months. People who had been planning to go to Elveden have been promised either a full refund or an alternative holiday. The resort's glass dome, which housed restaurants, shops, leisure facilities and a swimming pool, has been completely destroyed. No-one was seriously hurt in the fire, although one contractor was treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
Damage is expected to run into millions of pounds. Fire crews have been working to contain smaller fires which have broken out. A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire Service, said: "We still have two crews at the scene damping down. "It is clear they will have to be there for some time yet. Roof fire "As of now fire investigators have been unable to access all of the site to begin their work." Crews were first called at 1000 BST on Thursday to a fire in the roof. The damage covers the majority of the Plaza complex, including restaurants, sports halls and ten-pin bowling alley. At the height of the fire, 150 firefighters from Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire were at the scene. The 400-acre woodland site opened in 1989 and is one of three Center Parcs in the UK. |
