Rock of saus-ages
Sausage-maker David Bell
David Bell's sausages have won him national awards
Sausage maker David Bell will be hoping the Brit Awards go with a bang-er, with 6,000 of his sausages on the menu at the ceremony.

It is the biggest contract ever for Mr Bell, whose company Bangers Galore is based in Horsham, West Sussex.

He is used to making thousands of sausages a week, but had to work unbroken for a day-and-a-half to fulfil his Brit Awards commitment.

But his contribution to the star-studded night was not enough to earn him an invitation to the event.

You wouldn't believe how far people will travel to get a decent sausage

Mr Bell developed a taste for sausages as a boy - to the extent where he would watch fascinated when his mother took him to the butcher's shop.

When he left school he aimed to go into catering but found a job making sausages and has remained in the trade for 20 years.

He won the National Sausage Competition in 1992 and 1994 and says his bangers always sell out when he goes to trade fairs.

Great British event

His previous sausage-making highlight came when his lamb and leek variety made the menu at 10 Downing Street.

Mr Bell sells his products through a range of shops around Surrey and Sussex but also takes larger orders - like that for the Brits - through a contract with a catering firm.

"People travel for miles to go and pick up sausages. You wouldn't believe how far people will travel to get a decent sausage," he said.

He said he gulped when he was first asked to make 6,000 sausages for the awards but is proud to have his goods on the menu at such a major event.

But while stars like Tom Jones, Ms Dynamite and Coldplay might enjoy David's sausages, he will only be able to enjoy seeing them if he watches on television.

He said: "Obviously it's a great British event, it's the biggest event of the year.

"It's all coming to me now how big it is, but caterers just supply them or serve them."
